Chiefs urged to strengthen community security in Machinga

Community leaders and police officers discuss security strategies in Machinga.

The Officer-in-Charge for Machinga Police, Assistant Commissioner Ireen Kaphamtengo, has called on local chiefs to take an active role in maintaining security within their communities to help curb rising cases of theft and crime.

She made the appeal during a meeting held at the headquarters of Traditional Authority Nyumwanyumwa, which brought together village headmen and members of community policing committees to discuss local security concerns.

Kaphamtengo emphasized that stronger involvement from chiefs can significantly reduce crime, noting that many offenders originate from within the same communities they target.

She also reminded residents that police bail is free of charge and urged them to report any officers who demand payment in exchange for bail to her office or other senior authorities.

Addressing social challenges, Kaphamtengo cautioned against suicide, encouraging community members to seek support and share their problems rather than suffering in silence.

“Police bail is free. If any officer asks for money, report them to my office,” she said.

Senior Chief Nyumwanyumwa expressed appreciation to Kaphamtengo and her team for organizing the meeting, describing it as timely and important.

He pledged that traditional leaders would work together to strengthen security across the area.
