Msaka leads rollout of 114 motorbikes to speed up school inspections

Primary Education Advisors across Malawi are set for faster school visits after the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology distributed 114 motorcycles to all districts.

Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Bright Msaka, presided over the handover on Tuesday in Lilongwe and stated that the motorbikes will address long-standing transport problems that have hindered supervision in schools.

“These motorcycles will carry knowledge, supervision, and support with speed to the remotest classroom in Malawi,” he said.

The ministry expects the change to be immediate and advisors who managed one school visit per week can now cover up to three schools in a day.

Msaka said the intervention backs the government’s promise that no learner should be left behind because of distance.

He directed education offices to set aside funds for fuel and regular maintenance, and stressed that the motorbikes are strictly for official work like mentoring teachers, checking curriculum delivery, and upholding classroom standards.

For advisors in the field, the support comes at a critical time. Raphael Beleko, Coordinating Primary Education Advisor for Mchinji District, said poor mobility has repeatedly delayed visits and weakened oversight.

He expects the new motorbikes to allow closer, more frequent monitoring of teaching and learning, and appealed to officers to look after the bikes so that they last.
