Political expert Henry Chingaipe has called on members of the Catholic Students Organization (CSO) at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to actively participate in politics in order to help transform the country’s political landscape.
Chingaipe made the remarks at UNIMA’s Great Hall in Zomba during a Holy Mass held as part of a get-together event that brought together current Catholic students and alumni of the university.
The gathering was held under the theme, “Be devoted to one another in love.”

Serving as guest of honor, Chingaipe, himself a former UNIMA student, expressed his desire to see educated young Catholics take a leading role in politics, particularly in advancing social justice and national development.
He urged the students not to shy away from political involvement, noting that many of the country’s challenges stem from poor political practices that hinder progress.
Chingaipe emphasized that meaningful development requires the participation of well-informed and like-minded individuals, especially those with higher education, who can contribute to shaping policies and promoting justice.
“Our Church teaches that every Catholic Christian has a role to play in politics for the development of the country,” he said.
During the Mass, Fr. Charles Duncan, who presided over the service, highlighted the importance of unity among university students, noting that they face various academic and social challenges that require collective discussion and support.
He also encouraged members of the Catholic Students Organization to uphold love for one another and to prioritize God in their daily lives.
Meanwhile, CSO President Richard Maduya described the get-together as significant, saying it provides a platform for current students and alumni to exchange knowledge and share experiences.
