On Friday, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Simplex Chithyola Banda and MCP Chief Whip Moses Kunkuyu walked out of the chamber at speed before journalists had even entered for post-adjournment interviews, bypassing the expected media engagement and triggering immediate speculation over whether their abrupt exit reflected discomfort after a government-framed successful sitting or fear of possible arrest.
Chithyola was expected to engage the press, as is customary after major parliamentary sittings, but instead left swiftly, denying journalists the opportunity to seek clarification on remarks and positions raised during the day’s proceedings.
Their exit came shortly after Leader of the House Jappie Mhango formally moved the adjournment sine die motion, reflecting on a busy legislative session that saw key fiscal and policy business advanced through Parliament.

However, before the adjournment formalities and media scramble outside the chamber, Chithyola Banda had already delivered his closing remarks in the House, setting out a sharply critical assessment of the country’s economic situation.
He told Parliament that Malawians are suffering amid a rising cost of living, arguing that excessive taxation and recent fuel price increases had placed significant pressure on already struggling households.
The Opposition Leader further warned that purchasing power had been severely eroded, saying many workers were now resorting to walking to work due to worsening economic conditions.
He also expressed concern over what he described as limited prospects for young people, arguing that employment creation had not been sufficiently prioritised in the recently passed fiscal plan.
The House had convened on 13 February 2026 following the State of the Nation Address by President Peter Mutharika, and during the session MPs debated the SONA and passed the national budget for the 2026/2027 financial year before adjourning sine die.
Against that backdrop, the opposition leaders’ swift departure from the media zone has fuelled competing interpretations, with some viewing it as avoidance after a politically difficult sitting, while others point to unverified claims circulating about possible legal pressure or arrests, which remain unconfirmed by any official source.
