Hyphen snubs IKK

When Mfumu Hyphen appeared on ZanyimboTV’s Episode 52 on Friday, fans were hoping for fireworks — a direct response to IKK after weeks of simmering tension between two of Malawi’s most talked-about hip-hop figures. What they got instead was something far more calculated.

The “Tiziti Mwayiwala” hitmaker kept quiet on the beef — but when asked to name his top five Malawian hip-hop artists, IKK was nowhere on the list. No words needed. The snub landed louder than any diss track could have.

No diss track. No callout. Just a list — and a very deliberate omission that sent the internet into a frenzy.

The appearance came after a controversy of its own. A Podcast Malawi episode featuring Hyphen had been heavily teased on social media, with promotional reels strongly suggesting he would address IKK directly. The episode was never released. Fans were left frustrated, and speculation quickly filled the void — with many believing Hyphen was advised to stay silent and chose instead to express himself through the ZanyimboTV snub rather than an open confrontation.

The tension between the two artists traces back about a month, when IKK took aim at Hyphen on Mikozi’s “Ma Bars pa Bar” freestyle, accusing the veteran rapper of leaning on his established name rather than his actual craft. It was a pointed jab — and one that clearly struck a nerve, even if Hyphen has chosen not to respond in kind publicly.

IKK has also been taking shots at Hyphen at various events, keeping the pressure on and forcing the conversation into public spaces whether Hyphen engages or not.

Beyond the personal rivalry, the beef has shone a spotlight on something bigger: the revival of Malawian hip-hop. After years of Amapiano and Afrobeats dominating the local music scene, IKK is widely credited with helping shift attention back to the genre — making this feud not just personal drama, but a flashpoint in a broader cultural moment for rap in Malawi.

Whether Hyphen eventually responds — on a podcast, in a freestyle, or simply through another well-timed omission — remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Malawi’s hip-hop scene is paying attention, and the silence is deafening.
