The United States government has threatened to jail journalists for reporting on a US special forces officer who is reportedly missing in Iran, raising fresh concerns about press freedom and the treatment of independent media.
US President Donald J. Trump issued the threats at the White House on Monday afternoon—remarks that critics say reflect an increasingly hostile stance toward the press. Earlier, US official Hegselth accused media outlets of reporting the news in a manner that failed to align with what he described as a “patriotic” perspective.
Media watchdogs and civil liberties groups have warned that such rhetoric risks undermining democratic norms and could have a chilling effect on investigative journalism. Observers note that the use of state power to intimidate reporters is more commonly associated with authoritarian governments.
The developments come amid ongoing US and Israel war on Iran. The United States, together with Israel, has been bombing campaigns in Iraq, further heightening tensions.
The Guardian newspaper has observed that President Trump has reportedly intensified efforts to target media organisations that publish coverage he opposes, including threatening lawsuits and restricting access, during his second term. In January, a Washington Post reporter’s home was reportedly raided by the FBI.
Meanwhile, some US government and ruling party officials faced criticism for circulating an IA generated image that falsely claimed to show an American airman rescued in Iran. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and New York Representative Mike Lawler were among those who shared the image.
Iran has also claimed that the US mission to rescue the said downed airman was a cover operation to seize enriched uranium from the country, according to statements from the country’s Foreign Ministry on Monday.
Separately, Trump warned that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran does not agree to a deal, further escalating tensions in the region. Trump had issued an ultimatum for Iran to accept a peace deal by end of today.
