The Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE), are demanding an apology from Malawi’s former President Lazarus Chakwera over what they describe as “blood-stained comments.”
Speaking on Monday, 7 April 2026, during a funeral ceremony for Sub Traditional Authority Malembo in Lilongwe, Chakwera cautioned that his silence should not be mistaken for weakness.
However, in a press statement, CFCE Co-Chairperson Edward Kambanje said the grouping is disappointed with the former President’s remarks, calling them a clear attempt to whip up emotions and create divisions among Malawians.
“We are disappointed with the remarks.”- Kambanje
“We will not stand idly by while divisive rhetoric threatens the peace and stability of our country. Former President Chakwera’s statement that those who fought for the country’s liberation have hands stained with blood is a gross insult to the sacrifices made by our heroes, and we reject it in the strongest terms possible. The people of Malawi have already spoken, and they have chosen a path of peace and development,” Kambanje stated.
The organization said it is time for all leaders to respect the will of the people and work towards building a better future for all Malawians. CFCE has since urged Chakwera to refrain from making statements that could be divisive and instead promote unity and peace among Malawians.
“We demand that former President Chakwera apologize for his statements and commit to promoting unity and peace in Malawi,” he added.
CFCE further argues that as a leader, Chakwera has a responsibility to foster healing and reconciliation, not sow discord, emphasizing that the time for politics is over; it is time to work together to improve the lives of all Malawians.
The organization also appealed to citizens to reject the politics of division and instead work together to build a peaceful and prosperous future for the country.
