Police in Zomba have arrested two men for illegal possession of firearms following a targeted security operation conducted on Thursday afternoon, as part of efforts to maintain safety ahead of the Easter celebrations.
The arrests took place on 2 April 2026 at approximately 1:30 PM near the Zomba District Council offices.
According to Eastern Region Police Commissioner Jane Mandala, detectives acted on credible intelligence, leading to the apprehension of the suspects, identified as Chinagana Chikadayenda, 26, from Chikwawa District, and William Kennedy, 34, from Mangochi District.
Mandala stated that the operation was carried out by a team of detectives, including Inspector Stella Likukuta, Inspector William Mwalabu, Sub-Inspector Kennedy Saidi, Lonjezo Maalo, and Sergeant Shaibu Liposa.
Upon arrest, the suspects were found with two BLOW F92 calibre 9mm P.A.K pistols and 30 rounds of blank ammunition.
The firearms had been concealed and were suspected to be intended for criminal use.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were allegedly planning to rob a prominent businessman at Thondwe Trading Centre.
Police say the swift action by officers successfully prevented the crime.
The two men remain in custody and are expected to appear in court once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, police have stepped up security operations across Zomba District as part of broader measures to ensure a peaceful and crime-free Easter period. Commissioner Mandala has urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
