Likoma marine police intensify lake patrols to enhance safety during easter holiday

Marine police patrols on Lake Likoma to ensure safety during Easter holiday.

The Likoma Marine Police Unit has intensified patrols on Lake Malawi as part of ongoing efforts to prevent water-related accidents and enhance safety during the Easter holiday period.

Speaking to Malawi24 during the patrols, Sub-Inspector Gideon Banda, Second-in-Command of the Likoma Marine Police Unit, expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance among lake users following recent awareness campaigns.

“We are very pleased that people are adhering to our calls. Last week, we conducted extensive awareness campaigns across resorts and beaches, urging owners to implement safety measures at their premises. This includes ensuring the availability of safety equipment and preventing intoxicated individuals from entering the water,” said Banda.

He added that the patrols are not only aimed at enforcing regulations but also at educating the public on responsible behavior while using the lake.

The awareness initiative, which involved engagement with resort owners, boat operators, and beachgoers, emphasized the importance of life-saving equipment, adherence to boating regulations, and general water safety practices.

Malawi24, which joined the marine officers during the patrol exercise, observed improved compliance in several areas, including the presence of safety measures at recreational sites and increased caution among lake users.

Meanwhile, some lake users in Likoma have commended the visible presence of marine police officers, noting that it has significantly enhanced safety and security in many areas during the Easter celebrations.

“The presence of the police has made a big difference. We feel safer now, especially during this busy holiday period when many people flock to the lake,” said one beachgoer.

The Likoma Marine Police Unit has assured the public that patrols will continue throughout the festive season to ensure that safety standards are maintained and accidents are minimized on Lake Malawi.

However, despite these efforts, the unit continues to face challenges, including a lack of adequate resources. Currently, it operates with only one small boat, which may not be sufficient for effective rescue operations in the event of an accident on the lake.
