Malawi, Zambia strengthen military ties as security needs grow

Malawi and Zambia military officials strengthen ties in a formal handshake.

Malawi and Zambia have renewed their commitment to stronger military cooperation following a visit by Malawi’s Chief of Defence Force, General George Jaffu Jr, to the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Headquarters in Lusaka on Monday.

The visit demonstrates growing cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, particularly in areas such as joint training, disaster response, and efforts to address cross-border security threats.

Speaking on behalf of ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, Deputy Commander and Chief of Air Staff, Major General Henry Chiwaya, said Zambia remains committed to continued military cooperation with Malawi.

He described Malawi and Zambia as “one people separated by borders,” highlighting their shared history under the former Federation of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

Chiwaya gave examples of the strong partnership between the two countries.

He mentioned Zambia’s support to Malawi during Cyclone Freddy, where the Zambia Air Force helped with evacuations and humanitarian missions.

He also referred to joint search and rescue operations after the death of Saulos Klaus Chilima, as well as Malawi’s participation in the 2025 SADC Blue Exercise Lugwasho.

He also noted growing economic relations between the two countries.

Zambia exports goods such as cement, iron, and tobacco to Malawi, while importing fertilizer, tea, and beverages from Malawi.

In his remarks, General Jaffu thanked Zambia for its continued support, especially in training Malawi Air Force personnel.

He said Malawi is committed to strengthening cooperation in building capacity and addressing shared challenges like transnational crime and illegal migration.

In February 2026, the Zambian military also sent its officers to Malawi for different training courses.

The visit highlights the long-standing relationship between Malawi and Zambia, built on shared history, mutual support, and a common goal of promoting peace and security in the Southern African region.
