Prisons open up to communities through Trade Fair drive

The Malawi Prison Service has stepped up public engagement through trade fairs, positioning itself as a key contributor to socio-economic development while advancing a modern correctional approach.

The service recently took part in a trade fair in Zomba, where it showcased its products and services and forged stronger ties with local communities and potential business partners.

Officials say the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to expand opportunities for inmates and staff through skills development and exposure to market demands.

Communities are being urged to support the evolving correctional model, which prioritizes rehabilitation, reintegration and active participation in national development.

Malawi Prison Service Public Relations Officer Steve Meke said the trade fairs are playing a crucial role in narrowing the gap between prisons and society.

“These trade fairs are providing an opportunity for the Malawi Prison Service to showcase its products and services while also connecting inmates to communities, which will support their reintegration,” said Meke.

He added that the initiative reflects a shift from isolation to a collaborative correctional approach, emphasizing that meaningful rehabilitation and reintegration can only be achieved through strong partnerships with communities.
