Reassurance from MERA on fuel supply amidst global market uncertainty and geopolitical tensions affe.

Following growing concern over the fuel supply situation, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) has assured the public that efforts are underway to maintain a stable and reliable fuel supply in the country.

In a public statement dated March 31 2026, Mera said the country’s fuel supply situation is being closely monitored in light of recent international developments affecting petroleum markets.

The authority said it is particularly tracking ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including disruptions to key oil supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which it described as a critical transit corridor for petroleum products and global fuel prices.

Mera said the developments have increased uncertainty in global fuel supply chains and could have implications for import-dependent countries such as Malawi.

The regulator said it is working closely with fuel importers and other key stakeholders to strengthen supply arrangements and ensure continued availability of petroleum products across the country.

Mera further said it will continue monitoring developments in international petroleum markets and take appropriate measures in line with its mandate to promote stability and efficiency in the energy sector.

The authority also said it remains committed to safeguarding national energy security and urged the public to remain calm, avoid panic buying and use available fuel responsibly during the period.Mera said the public will be informed of any significant developments.
