The Member of Parliament for Zomba City South, James Mpunga, has issued a warning against illegal gold mining activities taking place in the Likangala River, citing concerns over increased flooding risks.

His remarks come after the arrest of six individuals who were found conducting unauthorized mining along the riverbanks. According to Mpunga, such activities are contributing to the river overflowing, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

He emphasized that mining without proper authorization violates government regulations governing the extraction of minerals.

Authorities are working together to address the issue, with Members of Parliament collaborating with the Zomba City Council to curb illegal practices.

Mpunga also noted that local leaders have been engaged to raise awareness about the dangers of mining along the river.

“We have asked the Zomba City Council and traditional leaders to educate communities on the risks associated with gold mining in the Likangala River, as it is contributing to flooding,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Southern Region Engineer in the Ministry of Mining, Malumbo Mpasa, described illegal gold mining as a serious offense, highlighting that it results in substantial loss of government revenue.
