The Board of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi has appointed Engineer William Kaipa as the Corporation’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 April 2026.
In a statement, Board Chairperson Alfred Nhlema said the appointment follows a carefully considered process aimed at maintaining stability and strategic direction at the power utility.
Nhlema said the decision comes amid ongoing challenges in the power sector, including system reliability issues and the need to speed up infrastructure reforms, prompting the Board to conduct an expedited executive search.
He described the move as a measured decision taken within the Board’s fiduciary responsibilities to ensure continuity of leadership and service delivery.
Kaipa brings over 37 years of experience in the energy, infrastructure and resources sectors. He has held senior roles at Eskom, Airports Company South Africa, and Arup.
His experience includes serving as Lead Mechanical Engineer for the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme and involvement in the Majuba UCG Pilot Plant, as well as working at Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station where he oversaw plant performance improvements.
Kaipa holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Malawi.
He is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa. The Board expressed confidence that his experience will help stabilise ESCOM’s operations and accelerate ongoing projects.
