Adventist youth donate MK1 million worth of items to Mzimba prison

School children and youth donate MK1 million worth of items to Mzimba prison.

Youth from the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Mzimba District have donated food items and soap worth about MK1 million to inmates at Mzimba Prison as part of their community outreach initiatives.

The donation was organized by the church’s Adventist Youth (AY) during a visit to the correctional facility, where members interacted with inmates and shared words of encouragement.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Adventist Youth Vice Chairperson Michael Mapunda said the church was moved by the challenges inmates face, including shortages of basic necessities such as soap, food, and clothing.

Mapunda explained that although the needs in the prison are numerous, the church decided to contribute what it could afford as a gesture of love and compassion.

“The items we have donated today are worth MK1 million. We purchased them so that we could share with our friends here at Mzimba Prison, with the aim of spreading the word of God everywhere,” he said.

He also urged other church congregations and well-wishers to extend support to inmates and other vulnerable groups in society.

Receiving the donation, prison chaplain Sergeant Benjamin Sichamba expressed gratitude to the church for the timely support, noting that the government alone cannot meet all the needs within the prison.

Sichamba said contributions from faith-based organizations play a vital role in improving the welfare and morale of inmates.

One of the inmates, Benjamin Nxumayo, also welcomed the visit, saying the prisoners were encouraged that the church remembered them despite their situation.

Nxumayo appealed to the church to continue supporting inmates with essential items such as clothing, soap, body lotion, and Bibles.

The donation was made under the theme “Communion in Action” as part of activities commemorating Global Youth Day, an annual initiative in which young members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church participate in community service and outreach programs aimed at spreading the gospel and assisting those in need.
