United Transformation Movement (UTM) Vice President for the North, Catherine Mzumara, has hailed the party’s recent parliamentary win as a sign of revival while cautiously praising President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s early leadership.
Mzumara said the election of Mathews Mtumbuka as Member of Parliament for Rumphi Central on a UTM ticket has injected fresh confidence into the party’s ranks.
She described the win as a milestone, noting that securing a by-election victory against well-resourced competitors demonstrates the party’s growing appeal.
Highlighting UTM’s steady progress, Mzumara said the party has expanded its parliamentary presence from four members in 2019 to nine today, underscoring its resilience.
She also commended President Mutharika’s administration for a promising start, particularly improvements in maize availability and affordability.
Mzumara said the drop in maize prices has provided tangible relief to ordinary Malawians, most of whom live below the poverty line.
Looking ahead, she urged the government to focus on visible, lasting infrastructure projects, including constructing a new airport and consolidating road developments, to leave a meaningful legacy.
