Mulhako wa Alhomwe mobilizes well-wishers to feed flood-hit families in Salima
Families in Polosi Village under Senior Chief Kalonga in Salima District have received life-saving food relief after floods destroyed homes and left many households struggling to survive.
The support, including maize flour and soya pieces, was mobilized by Joseph Buleki, Chairperson of the Mulhako wa Alhomwe, who reached out to well-wishers to assist those affected.
“When I arrived around 10am, I found children crying and people sitting helplessly without food. It was very painful,” said Buleki.
“We quickly contacted well-wishers to provide relief to those in urgent need. So far, 25 households have received assistance.”
Among those who responded was Eliam Banda, an officer at the Salima District Education Office, who donated food items to help families prepare meals quickly.
“Even though we do not have much, we felt it was important to share what we have. I could not stand by while children went hungry, so I acted immediately,” said Banda. “We brought maize flour and soya pieces so families could cook quickly and children could eat.”
Residents welcomed the support, saying it came at a time of great need.

Beneficiary Annie Banda said:“Water from the floods had soaked our homes and bedding. We had nothing to cook, and children were going to bed hungry.
This food has brought relief and hope,” she said. The floods have also destroyed sanitation facilities, leaving many households at risk of disease.
With toilets collapsed and property damaged, families have struggled to cook, earn daily income, and find safe shelter.
Buleki emphasized that the assistance is intended for all households affected by the floods, not only Mulhako wa Alhomwe members.
“We are appealing to more well-wishers to come forward. The needs are huge, but together we can help families survive this crisis,” he said.
While the relief has reached some households, residents say continued support is urgently needed to ensure families have enough food and safe conditions as the rains continue.
