Landslide destruction in Nkhoma caused by severe weather, with residents assessing the damage.

A massive landslide has struck the Nkhoma area of Lilongwe, Malawi, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake.

The landslide, which occurred yesterday afternoon, has affected approximately 36 hectares of land, rendering it unusable for farming or habitation.

The landslide is believed to have originated from the Chilenje mountain and has impacted 17 households, according to reports.

The District Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) office has confirmed that the affected areas are no longer suitable for use due to the debris and rocks scattered everywhere.

Speaking during a food distribution exercise for the affected families, Wilson Moleni, head of the DoDMA’s disaster risk management department, emphasized the severity of the situation.

“The area is no longer habitable, and people cannot use the land for farming or other purposes,” he said. One of the affected residents, Stanely Matumbi Banda, recounted the devastating impact of the landslide.

“Apart from our crops, we also lost livestock, including goats, pigs, and chickens,” he said, expressing gratitude for the support received from authorities and well-wishers.

The landslide has left many families without a means of livelihood, highlighting the need for urgent support and intervention.

The government and humanitarian agencies are working to provide assistance to those affected, including food and shelter.

The incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of Malawi’s communities to natural disasters, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide necessary support to those affected.
