MCTU demands suspension, arrests, termination of Amaryllis hotel deal

Amaryllis Hotel in Malawi under investigation for sale valuation by ICAM.

Finally, the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) has broken its silence on the controversial use of Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF) money in the dubious purchase of the Amaryllis Hotel, calling for immediate suspensions, urgent investigations, arrests, and full termination of the deal.

In a press statement signed by Secretary General Charles Kumchenga and President Kelvin Chifunda, MCTU expressed concern over the revelations emerging from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry and information circulating in the public domain regarding the dubious Amaryllis deal.

The union warned that allowing officials involved in the Amaryllis Hotel transaction to remain in their positions risks compromising the integrity of the inquiry and says anyone found to have abused authority, manipulated property valuations, or facilitated financial misconduct must be arrested immediately.

“MCTU makes the following demands: Immediate suspension of all officials involved in the approval or execution of this transaction pending the outcome of investigations,” read the statement.

“Expedited investigations and immediate arrests of any individuals found to have abused their authority, manipulated valuations, or facilitated financial misconduct.”

The Union demanded that the Amaryllis Hotel transaction should be cancelled with all PSPTF funds already disbursed fully recovered or refunded, and further called for a comprehensive review and strengthening of pension investment regulations to prevent workers’ retirement savings from being exposed to overpriced or high-risk investments.

MCTU warns that Malawi cannot build a just and prosperous society while corruption and mismanagement are tolerated, vowing to continue standing with workers and pensioners to ensure accountability and protection of their hard-earned savings.
