Heavy rains affect 197 households in Salima, number likely to rise

Local officials assess flood damage to homes caused by heavy rains in Salima.

A preliminary report assessing the impact of heavy rains shows that 197 households have been affected in Salima District, with authorities warning that the number may rise as the downpours continue.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) says it has begun rolling out response measures to assist families impacted by the floods across the district.

DoDMA Commissioner Wilson Moleni said this after touring some of the affected areas, including Msangu, where several homes have been damaged.

“We have started providing assistance to affected households, and more support is on the way. Vehicles are already being dispatched to deliver relief items to various areas,” he said.

Moleni added that some assistance will also reach communities under Senior Chief Makanjira, where the impact of the heavy rains has been significant.

He urged families living in damaged or unsafe houses to relocate to safer areas to prevent further loss of property and risk to life.

Authorities are working closely with the Salima District Council to coordinate relief efforts as the situation continues to evolve.

The floods, triggered by persistent heavy rains, have raised concerns over the safety of vulnerable communities, particularly those living in low-lying areas.

Officials warn that with more rains expected, the number of affected households could increase, putting additional pressure on response efforts.

Residents in affected areas are calling for urgent support, with local leaders emphasizing the need for food, shelter, and basic supplies as water levels rise
