The Malawi Government has issued a strong warning to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), accusing it of fueling attacks on persons with albinism and calling on Malawians to join efforts to stop the killings.
The remarks were made in Parliament on Tuesday by Minister of Information Shadric Namalomba, who alleged that cases of abductions and killings of people with albinism tend to rise when the MCP is in opposition.
“We want to warn Malawi Congress Party, it must stop this, this is not humanity,” said Namalomba, as he urged citizens to question the opposition’s role in the incidents.
Namalomba said the trend was deeply concerning and questioned the conduct of the opposition, arguing that such acts should not be used for political gain.
He insisted government remains committed to protecting all citizens, adding that investigations into the latest disappearance are already underway.
The exchange followed concerns raised by MCP legislator Peter Dimba, who reported the disappearance of a young man with albinism from his Phirilanjuzi Constituency in Lilongwe.
Dimba said the man had been missing for five days despite the matter being reported to police, calling for urgent intervention from authorities.
“We are talking of somebody missing, a young man missing… we want the police to go on the ground and search for him,” Dimba said, stressing that he did not accuse anyone but sought action.
He later criticized Namalomba’s response as inappropriate, maintaining that the matter required seriousness and focus on finding the missing individual rather than political accusations.
