MP pushes for Lake transport revival to cut costs

An MP in Malawi promotes revitalising lake transport to reduce travel costs and improve connectivity.

Nkhotakota Central legislator Silvester Ayuba James has called for urgent investment in water transport, arguing it could significantly reduce the cost of moving goods across Malawi.

Speaking during an interview in Parliament, James said development depends on efficient movement of heavy cargo, which globally is best handled through water and rail systems.

He noted that Malawi’s vast lake offers a natural and underutilized route that could ease the burden on expensive road transport.

According to the lawmaker, overreliance on roads has driven up transportation costs, which in turn has pushed the prices of goods higher across the economy.

He cited recent findings suggesting that revamping key lake ports could lower fuel transportation costs and ultimately reduce pump prices.

James also warned that heavy trucks are damaging roads not designed for such loads, forcing the country into costly and frequent maintenance cycles it can scarcely afford.

He stressed that revitalizing water transport would ease pressure on infrastructure and provide a more sustainable, cost-effective solution for the economy.
