Malawi’s VP opts for personal pride over official comfort

Vice President of Malawi prioritises personal pride over official comfort during public appearance.

In a striking display of fiscal prudence,Vice President, Jane Ansah, has chosen to reside in her own home, rather than occupy an official residence that has been left to languish in disrepair for over four years.

The story of the neglected official residence in Area 12 is one of bureaucratic inefficiency and financial delays.

The house, which was once intended to serve as the Vice President’s official abode, has been rendered uninhabitable due to extensive damage inflicted by previous occupants.

Despite repeated pleas for funding to renovate the property, the authorities have dragged their feet.

The Office of the Vice President submitted a proposal for renovations in the 2024/2025 financial year, only to be told that no funds were available.

According to Eric Yesaya, Principal Secretary in the Office of the Vice President, the Vice President was left with no choice but to decline the offer of a rental accommodation, citing the exorbitant costs quoted by the Ministry of Lands and Housing.

The rentals for three identified houses ranged from K7 million to K15 million, a price tag which the Vice President deemed unsustainable.

In a refreshing departure from the norm, she has opted to prioritize the national purse over personal comfort, choosing instead to remain in her own home.

Her decision speaks volumes about her commitment to accountability and responsible governance.

As Malawians grapple with the challenges of economic hardship, the Vice President’s stance is likely to strike a chord with many citizens who are being forced to make difficult choices every day.

By choosing to forgo the trappings of office, Ansah has sent a powerful message about her dedication to the people she serves.
