Hundreds of Malawians repatriated fromSouth Africa for immigration violations
Hundreds of Malawians, including 22 women, have been returned from South Africa for violating immigration laws and overstaying.
It is reported that the group arrived at the Mwanza border post on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at around 9 pm on seven buses.
According to Sophina Chibenthu Mwenda, spokesperson for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services at Mwanza border post, the individuals were arrested in South Africa at different times and detained at Lindela Repatriation Centre before being sent back.
Mwenda said the repatriation followed agreements between South African authorities and Malawi’s diplomatic mission to facilitate the return process.
However she urged Malawians to follow proper procedures, including obtaining valid travel documents and visas, as most of those repatriated had not complied.
