A pressure group within the (MCP) calling itself MCP Revolution for Change of Leadership has asked the party president to step down, accusing him of ignoring warnings on governance, corruption, and internal party management.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, the group’s chairperson said the movement is demanding leadership change in the party because its earlier concerns about how the party and government are being run have not been addressed.
Chaziya said the reform movement emerged in 2021 shortly after MCP formed a government under the Tonse Alliance.
He said members formed the movement after noticing what they described as worrying developments in both the party and government.
“We stand before you today as members of the MCP Revolution for Change of Leadership, a serious and committed reform movement within the Malawi Congress Party,” said Chaziya.
He said the movement was established to push for reforms within the MCP.
“This movement is not a joke, nor is it driven by personal grudges. It is a principled effort to restore accountability, discipline, and direction within our beloved party,” he said.
Chaziya said members of the group later sought an audience with Chakwera to present their concerns.
According to him, the group warned the party president that the administration was gradually moving away from the values and structures of MCP.
“We warned him that the administration was gradually drifting away from the values and structures of the Malawi Congress Party,” he said.
The group also alleged that key positions in government were increasingly being given to individuals who have little or no historical connection with MCP.
Chaziya further claimed that some of the appointments were going to relatives and associates.
He said the situation has frustrated some long-serving members of the party.
Officials from MCP were yet to comment on the development by press time.
