Over 600 pupils and teachers struggle amid broken sanitation facilities in Mzimba

More than 600 pupils and teachers at Muhana Primary School in Mzimba District are facing serious health risks due to poor sanitation, as the school currently has a large number of broken toilets that are out of use.

Reports indicate that most of the school’s toilets, particularly those designated for boys, are not functioning properly.

This has forced students to delay or avoid using the facilities altogether, creating an unsafe and unhygienic environment.

The school’s head teacher, Obedie Golomba Kanyinji, confirmed the situation to Malawi24, emphasizing the urgency of the problem.

“We have a serious problem and have appealed to parents and well-wishers to urgently help renovate the toilets and provide adequate facilities to protect learners from diseases such as cholera and dysentery,” Said Kanyinji.

Malawi24 has learned that the school has over 600 pupils, all of whom are currently queuing for the few functional toilets, increasing the risk of infectious disease spread.

Rev. Moses Nkhana, Executive Director of the Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO), described the situation as alarming and in need of immediate attention.

“It is very unfortunate that children have to compete for toilets. Education authorities need to act swiftly and involve the community in renovating the damaged facilities,” said Nkhana.

This situation underscores a growing concern over school sanitation in the region, as poor facilities not only threaten learners’ health but also affect attendance and academic performance.

Education stakeholders, parents, and local organizations are being urged to unite to address this urgent issue.
