The Physical Planning Office at the Karonga District Council has presented the Karonga Secondary City Land Use Plan to the District Executive Committee, outlining how Karonga will develop into a climate-resilient urban centre.
Physical Planning Officer Ulemu Nyondo presented the plan, explaining that the initiative is being supported by the World Bank as part of efforts to make the district resilient to the effects of climate change.
“The plan provides guidance on how land in the town should be used and the type of infrastructure that should be developed as Karonga grows. The proposed developments include improved road networks, a referral hospital, an international airport,t and other essential facilities expected in a secondary city”, Nyondo said.
Nyondo further said infrastructure under the plan will be designed in a way that can withstand climate-related challenges such as floods and other extreme weather conditions.
In his contribution, the desk officer for the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) in Karonga, Obert Mkandawire, commended the council for outlining the project, describing it as vital for transforming the district.
However, he suggested that the council should establish a team to oversee the project and provide technical support during its implementation.
In his remarks, Karonga District Commissioner Willard Mwambo said collaboration and teamwork among stakeholders will be crucial for the successful implementation of the project.
Mwambo therefore called on stakeholders, sector heads, and the media to take a proactive role in disseminating information about the project so that the public can understand and appreciate the developments being undertaken by the Physical Planning Department.
