Families battling kidney failure could soon access life-saving treatment closer to home as the inaugural Saulos Klaus Chilima Foundation Charity Golf Tournament tees off today at the Lilongwe Golf Club, turning remembrance into action through practical support for patients in need.

The tournament is being held in honour of Malawi’s late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, continuing his legacy of compassion and service following his tragic death in a military plane crash on June 10, 2024.

Funds raised from the tournament will go towards purchasing dialysis machines for selected district hospitals across the country, a move expected to ease the burden on patients who often travel long distances to access treatment.

“The late Dr. Chilima believed in our ability as a people to assist government in uplifting the poor. Government alone cannot manage to provide for each and every one of us. But through efforts like these, with your financial and material donations and encouragement, a lot of people with kidney challenges and needing dialysis treatment will be assisted,” said Foundation Trustee Sean Chilima.

Chairperson of the fundraising committee Boyd Luwe said the strong response from the corporate world helped turn months of preparation into reality.

“As a committee steering the fundraising aspect of the golf tournament, we are delighted with the responses so far. We are on the right track,” he said.

With sponsorship packages ranging from K25 million Diamond partners to K5 million Bronze supporters, today’s tournament has attracted participation from across sectors, reflecting a shared commitment to continue Chilima’s mission of uplifting the vulnerable.
