The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) has commended inmates at Zomba Central Prison for maintaining discipline after heavy rains tore off the roofs of two cell blocks on Tuesday night, affecting 67 prisoners.

MPS spokesperson Steve Meke confirmed the incident, saying the storm caused significant damage but no serious injuries or security breaches occurred.

“Yes, I can confirm that last evening we had heavy rains in Zomba that affected one of our facilities, Zomba Central Prison, where two roofs of inmate cells were blown off, affecting 67 inmates,”

Meke said. “The good news is that no one was seriously injured and no inmate escaped from lawful custody.”

Meke praised the inmates for “showing elements of reform and rehabilitation” by remaining calm during the disruption.

He also commended prison officers for their swift and professional response, ensuring all affected inmates were safely relocated to alternative structures within the facility.

“As we speak, the situation is quiet and normal at Zomba Central Prison,” he said.

“The Malawi Prison Service will continue to discharge its duties professionally to ensure the security of our prisons and ultimately our nation.”Zomba Central Prison currently houses close to 2,000 inmates.
