The Women Lawyers Association of Malawi, an organization of female lawyers that represents people in legal matters, says it wants to reduce the violence that women and children face in different parts of the country.

One of the senior officials of the association, Hazel Miseleni, said this in the area of Senior Chief Nyambi in Mangochi, where the association was informing people about different types of violence and where they can report when they experience any form of abuse.

Miseleni said they decided to engage chiefs, women, and children in the area of Senior Chief Nyambi because research shows that in this area, women face various forms of violence and child marriages are very common.

She said another aim was to raise awareness among people about the different types of violence that can occur among them and also about legal issues, how the law explains these matters and the rights of individuals.

Miseleni added that they also wanted to inform people in the area that the Women Lawyers Association represents women and children in legal cases if they experience violence.

She said violence is harmful and urged people to stop abusing one another at workplaces and in their communities.

She also told women and children that if they are abused, they should report the incidents by calling the authorities.

“There are many forms of violence, and some include grabbing property from orphans and mistreating elderly people. We, as Women Lawyers, want to reduce such forms of violence,” she said.

Adding her remarks, Tionge Penama, who is also from the Women Lawyers Association, said informing people about legal matters is very important because it helps them understand how to avoid committing acts of violence against others.

In her remarks, Senior Chief Nyambi thanked the Women Lawyers Association for coming to her area to educate people on legal issues and matters concerning violence against women and children.

She said this will help women and children in her area know where to report if they experience violence, and she added that she and chiefs in the area will ensure that elderly people in their communities are no longer abused.
