Mzuni Hope Initiative (MHI), a student-led non-profit organization, has launched at Mzuzu University with the goal of enhancing the well-being and dignity of students and the surrounding community.

During an interview with Malawi24, Simenon Rashid, Chairman of MHI, shared the inspiration behind the initiative.

“The Mzuni Hope Initiative (MHI) was born out of a deep concern for the growing challenges affecting students’ well-being at Mzuzu University,” he said.

Rashid explained that MHI aims to address issues such as betting and financial mismanagement, drug and substance abuse, relationship-related stress, and lack of safe spaces to share personal struggles.

MHI plans to implement several programs, including mental health awareness campaigns, peer support and mentorship circles, campus-wide engagement activities, and partnership programs with external organizations and mental health advocates.

The initiative aims to engage all stakeholders through open communication, collaborative activities, and consistent outreach, with a focus on building partnerships with community organizations, NGOs, and campus leadership.

“We envision MHI expanding beyond Mzuzu University to become a national movement, reaching universities and colleges across Malawi. Our long-term goal is to establish dedicated mental health offices on university campuses, safe and accessible spaces where young people can share their burdens and receive guidance without judgment,” said Rashid.
