A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Nkhata-Bay has threatened to stage protests if the government does not remove James Tembo, the District Director of Human Resource and Administration.
Speaking to Malawi24, the group’s leader, James Kanthunkhaku Banda, said the youths are dissatisfied with the way Tembo is handling his duties at the district council.
“Tembo has brought tribalism into the office. He is favouring people who are related to him,” Banda claimed.
The group is also demanding clarification on how Chawezi Mwafulirwa was recruited as a driver, despite reports that he allegedly lacked the required qualifications and driving skills for the position.
According to Banda, the youths are further accusing Tembo of misconduct during the recent visit of Second Vice President Enock Kamzingeni Chihana to Nkhata-Bay, where he met chiefs, business operators, and youths. Banda alleges that Tembo “pocketed some of the money that was meant for the chiefs.”
One senior chief in Nkhata Bay, who requested anonymity, also spoke to us, saying:“Tembo deducted money from all of us chiefs who travelled to welcome the President in Blantyre.
Each chief was supposed to receive MK100,000, but he told us the money had been reduced because it included fuel allowances.
Since when do we contribute fuel money when we are invited by the President or ministers?” the chief asked.
In response, Tembo has dismissed the allegations, saying his office is open to anyone who wishes to raise complaints or concerns.
He cautioned the youths against rushing to the media before engaging his office through proper channels.Tembo previously served in Mzimba, where he also reportedly faced public resistance over alleged nepotism.
