A Malawian based in China, Jani Grey Kasunda,  expressed strong ambitions to contest in the 2030 presidential elections.  He argues the country is in urgent need of new blood with people-centered governance that prioritizes citizens’ welfare and dignity over self-enrichment. This trait has characterized local politics for far too long.

Kasunda, who is pursuing postgraduate studies in international relations in Guangzhou, China, said his vision is anchored in what he calls the “People’s Revolution,” a transformative agenda aimed at rebuilding trust between the government and the people of Malawi.

“The social contract has been weakened by years of total neglect of the people, unfulfilled promises, economic hardships, and governance challenges,” he says, insisting that Malawi needs a new generation of leadership committed to accountability, transparency, and inclusive development.

“The People’s Revolution seeks to restore the covenant between leaders and the people,”  a relationship he believes should be based on service, integrity, and genuine national progress,” Kasunda says.

He emphasizes the importance of empowering ordinary citizens, creating opportunities for the youth, and strengthening institutions that safeguard democracy.

Kasunda’s early declaration has sparked conversations among Malawians at home and the diaspora, many of whom are watching closely to see how his political movement shapes up towards 2030.

While Malawi’s political landscape is currently dominated by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), it remains unclear which side Kasunda aligns with as he has not publicly stated, saying he’s still consulting.
