There is renewed optimism that Lilongwe’s long-standing sanitation challenges may begin to ease following a K20.5 million commitment to Lilongwe City Council.

Earlier this week, the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc handed over K15 million, earmarked for sanitation activities and the maintenance of tools. At the same time, K5.5 million will finance the orientation of newly elected councilors this Thursday.

Leading the exercise, the Bank’s Account Relationship Manager for Corporate Banking, Frank Kunje said NBM plc was compelled to assist after the council highlighted the urgent need to address the city’s worsening hygiene.

“This initiative fits well within our corporate social responsibility focus on environmental management. When the council approached us, we found it important to assist,” he said.

Kunje further disclosed that the gesture forms part of a broader national effort, noting that the Bank has set aside K200 million to support councils across the country.

Lilongwe City Mayor, Peter Alex Banda applauded the intervention, saying it will play a crucial role in restoring dignity to the capital city.

“We will use these tools on our roads, in health facilities and in other critical areas. The city has not looked like a proper city for some time, and this support will help us change that,” Banda said.

The support includes bins, wheelbarrows and traffic cones, among other tools expected to boost the council’s sanitation drive.
