The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) is urging the public to support its rehabilitation initiatives by purchasing products crafted by inmates in its industrial workshops.

Speaking to Malawi24, MPS Public Relations Officer Steve Meke confirmed that the service has intensified efforts to enhance skills development and production across the country’s prisons.

“Malawi Prison Service has stepped up efforts to improve rehabilitation activities in all prisons,” Meke said.

“For example, we have upgraded the industrial workshop at Zomba Central Prison with modern equipment for trades such as carpentry, general mechanics, fashion design, and more. Construction has also begun on a new industrial workshop at Maula Prison.”

Meke emphasized that products from these workshops are of high quality and affordable, adding that public support not only sustains the workshops with necessary tools and materials but also helps advance rehabilitation efforts.

He further appealed to organizations and stakeholders to explore partnerships for skills development and to consider employment opportunities for ex-inmates who return to their communities equipped with valuable trade skills.

“This support enables former inmates to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of our country,” Meke concluded.
