In Malawi’s continuing battle against food insecurity, a faith-based agricultural program is taking root as a model for community-driven resilience. Salvation For All Ministries International (SFAMI), led by Apostle Clifford Kawinga, has expanded its Hope Field Initiative to Chimutu Village in Lilongwe’s Traditional Authority Tsabango, bringing new hope to hundreds of smallholder farmers.
At a ceremony held Thursday, SFAMI distributed vital farming inputs to three local farmer clubs, Kukulitsa Malire 1, 2, and 3 each with more than 200 members. The support included three diesel-powered irrigation pumps, 150 bags of fertilizer, and 150 kilograms of maize seed, aimed at boosting productivity and ensuring better harvests as the rainy season nears.
Malawi continues to grapple with chronic food shortages driven by erratic rainfall, limited irrigation, and scarce farming resources. According to figures cited by Apostle Kawinga, an estimated 4.7 million households remain food insecure in 2025, up slightly from 4.3 million two years earlier.
“The crisis is far from over,” Kawinga said. “Our mission is to restore hope and end hunger by empowering farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive.”
The Hope Field Initiative promotes cooperative farming, grouping 200-300 farmers to cultivate shared plots of up to 12 hectares. By pooling resources and receiving training in sustainable agricultural practices, these farmers are being guided toward greater productivity, market access, and long-term food security.
Local leaders have welcomed the expansion. Kukulitsa Malire Farmers Club chairperson Stevio Gomani said the new equipment and inputs will help farmers increase yields and improve their livelihoods.
“We are happy and grateful. These tools will make a real difference if we use them responsibly,” Gomani said.
For many in Chimutu Village, the latest expansion represents more than an agricultural investment, it is a renewal of hope. As the Hope Field Initiative continues to spread, its blend of faith, community engagement, and practical innovation is emerging as a blueprint for transforming Malawi’s rural economy.
