The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says  as they are preparing for 2030 general elections, there will be no creation of new boundaries for constituencies and wards.

Director of media and public relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa told the local media that the new electoral laws provisions that the demarcation of boundaries needs to be done once in a decade.

He further said the last boundary demarcation exercise was done in 2022 which means the next exercise will be done in 2032 .

“We will have the same boundaries and the same number of constituencies and wards because the new Electoral laws provide that new boundaries review should be done at an interval of ten years” Mwafulirwa said.

He then highlighted that the next general polls which will fall on 17 September 2030, will have the same number of constituencies and wards as it stands now.

Currently after the previous boundaries review in 2022, Malawi has now 229 constituencies and 509 wards.

MEC demarcates boundaries primarily to ensure fair and equitable representation for all citizens in the country’s presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections and ensure effective governance and development.
