Vice President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Timothy Mtambo, has strongly denied any connection to the ongoing alleged planned protests in Malawi, calling the circulating reports “completely false” and urging an end to what he described as cheap propaganda.

Mtambo made the remarks on his Facebook page on 12 November, addressing several messages and stories linking him to the protests. He described the claims as “completely false” and insisted he had no plans to organize or join any demonstrations.

“Please, always remember that I serve as Vice President of AFORD, which is part of the current Mutharika administration,” he said.

Mtambo said that at this point, his duty and commitment is to support his party President, Enock Kamzingeni Chihana, as he helps the State President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, in fixing the economic hardships that Malawians are going through.

Mtambo stressed that the success of the administration is intertwined with AFORD’s success and he said If the Mutharika administration fails, then AFORD fails too, and his party President fails as well.

He added that he has no intention to see them fail because Malawians have suffered enough.

He urged Malawians to give the newly elected leaders space to govern. “DPP and AFORD have just taken over the administration of the country. They deserve space and our collective support to set up and start implementing their promises,” Mtambo said.

The AFORD leader called for a shift away from politicization and propaganda. “Campaign and elections are over. This is a time for development. It is time to build Malawi into a prosperous nation that we desire,” he emphasized.

Mtambo also addressed the unauthorized use of his name and image online. “It is unfortunate that some people continue to use my name and image for propaganda or personal agendas. I urge everyone involved to stop this,” he wrote, appealing to social media users to pursue ambitions without exploiting him.

The statement clarified his long-standing break from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC). “I left HRDC over five years ago and have no intention of returning. The organization now has its own leadership and structures,” Mtambo said. He asked that all HRDC matters be directed to the organization’s current leadership, not to him.

Mtambo warned those spreading falsehoods or attempting to create controversy using his name. “Disregard any statement not issued directly by me. I have not appointed anyone to speak or post on my behalf. To those creating falsehoods, stop it! Leave me out of your propaganda,” he stated.

He expressed confidence in his resilience against attempts to intimidate him. “And to those who think they can intimidate me or create unnecessary controversy to make me hated — know that I passed that level long ago,” Mtambo wrote.

In 2020, Mtambo staged massive demonstrations to oust Mutharika, and after Mutharika was re-elected, he vowed to deal with the likes of HRDC, who were silent under Chakwera but have often opposed Mutharika’s regime
