Minister of Health and Sanitation Madalitso Baloyi on Monday conducted a surprise supervisory visit to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe to assess how medical drugs are being managed and administered at the country’s major referral facility.
The unannounced visit is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the delivery of healthcare services across the country.
The Minister was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Health, Dr. Dan Namarika, and other senior officials from both the Ministry of Health and Kamuzu Central Hospital.
During the inspection, Minister Baloyi interacted with hospital staff and pharmacy personnel to understand how drugs are procured, stored, distributed, and dispensed to patients.
He emphasized the importance of proper drug management systems, warning that the government will not tolerate leakages, theft, or mismanagement of essential medicines meant for patients.
Baloyi noted that Malawi’s healthcare sector continues to face challenges in ensuring that life-saving drugs reach those in need, and said that the government remains committed to addressing these gaps.
He also reminded hospital administrators and pharmacists of their duty to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in handling public health resources.
Dr. Dan Namarika, the Principal Secretary, echoed the Minister’s sentiments, stressing that effective drug management is crucial for ensuring quality service delivery and patient satisfaction.
He further stated that the Ministry has intensified supervision and monitoring across all major hospitals to curb malpractice and improve the supply chain of medical commodities.
Staff members at Kamuzu Central Hospital welcomed the visit, saying it demonstrated the government’s seriousness in ensuring that hospitals operate efficiently and serve patients with dignity.
Some health workers also took the opportunity to brief the Minister on the daily challenges they face, including drug shortages, congestion, and inadequate staffing levels.
Minister Baloyi assured the staff that government is working tirelessly to address systemic issues affecting public hospitals and to improve the welfare of healthcare workers.
He further stated that more surprise visits will be conducted in other districts to ensure that hospitals and clinics are functioning according to national health standards.
The Minister’s visit was met with positive reactions from the public, with many citizens commending him for his hands-on leadership style and proactive approach to solving problems in the health sector.
As the government continues its push for improved health service delivery, the Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all Malawians have access to safe, reliable, and affordable medical care.
