The Malawi government has unveiled plans to upgrade Mzimba District to municipal status, with Second Vice President Enock Chihana outlining a range of infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the district into a modern urban and economic hub for the Northern Region.

Speaking during an interface meeting with traditional leaders, business representatives, and officials from M’mbelwa District Council on Saturday, Chihana said the government seeks to position Mzimba as a strategic partner to Mzuzu City in driving regional development and economic growth.

“To realize this vision, we are prioritizing the construction of Mombela University, the upgrading of Mzimba District Hospital, and the completion of M’mbelwa Stadium.”

These projects go beyond infrastructure they are about creating opportunities, attracting investors, and improving the well-being of our people.”said Chihana.

He added that once Mzimba attains municipal status, the district will qualify for increased development funding and enjoy greater administrative autonomy, enabling it to accelerate local growth initiatives.

Meanwhile, M’mbelwa District Council’s Director of Education and Sports, Bridget Nungu, appealed to the government to expedite long-delayed projects, citing the stalled construction of the council’s office complex, M’mbelwa Stadium, and Mombera University.

“The delays have forced many council departments to operate from scattered locations, which negatively affects efficiency and service delivery, We also need improved road infrastructure to enhance access to education and mobility within the district.” said Nungu.

Paramount Chief M’mbelwa V welcomed the government’s renewed commitment to Mzimba but urged authorities to act swiftly on key challenges, including poor road conditions, food shortages, and unresolved chieftaincy disputes in the Mzikubola area.

“Our people cannot thrive where there is leadership conflict. Peace and unity are essential for progress, I also appeal for the timely distribution of fertilizer before the rains make the roads impassable,”he said.

The Paramount Chief expressed optimism that the municipality plan will unlock business potential and transform Mzimba into a thriving economic centre for the region.
