President Peter Mutharika has applauded the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for its continued commitment to promoting peace and stability across the region, saying such efforts are essential for achieving shared development goals.
Speaking in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation during a virtual address yesterday, Mutharika highlighted the regional body’s successful mediation efforts in Madagascar, where tensions had threatened to derail peace and democratic processes.
He reflected on his role in handling the political situation in Madagascar, stressing that instability in any member state affects the entire region.
IMutharika further urged member states to strengthen unity and cooperation, emphasizing that sustainable regional development depends on collective stability and mutual support.
Recently, the body raised concerns over the general elections in Tanzania, describing them as neither free nor fair. Reports indicate that about 1,000 demonstrators were shot by police officers, while others fled to Malawi seeking refuge.
