MPS to crack down on corrupt officers- Malawi24

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has issued a strong warning to its officers against engaging in corrupt practices, particularly soliciting bribes from motorists.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Stain Chaima, responsible for Operations, emphasized that corruption tarnishes the image of the police service and erodes public trust.

Speaking during an interface meeting with Regional Operations Officers and Traffic Officers, DIGP Chaima stressed the importance of professionalism, impartiality, and accountability.

“We must remain professional, impartial, and accountable to the people we serve, any officer who engages in corruption will be dealt with accordingly.” He said.

The DIGP reminded officers that roadblocks and traffic checkpoints are meant to enhance road safety and combat crime, not serve as platforms for personal gain. He also emphasized the need for customer care, urging officers to be respectful and service-oriented when dealing with motorists and the public.

Additionally, DIGP Chaima cautioned officers against using social media while on duty, saying it can compromise concentration and lead to unprofessional conduct. He underscored the MPS’s commitment to serving all citizens fairly and impartially, warning that those who tarnish the service’s image through corruption will face consequences.

The meeting, attended by nearly 160 participants from all six policing regions, aimed to address matters of traffic management and roadblocks.
