Chaos at Endindeni CDSS as learners protest teaching standards, 20 Arrested
About 20 students from Endindeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba have been arrested for allegedly vandalizing school property.
Reports indicate that the students became violent following disagreements with school authorities. While initial information suggested the unrest was triggered by dissatisfaction with the school diet, a Malawi24 investigation has established that the learners were actually protesting decisions made by the new head teacher and her deputy regarding academic matters.
Some students claimed they were not receiving proper English lessons. They alleged that instead of the assigned teacher conducting classes, another student was instructed to teach them, a situation they described as unacceptable.
“We are not learning English properly. The deputy head teacher who is supposed to teach us is not doing so, and they keep sending another student to teach us, which we do not accept,” some students told Malawi24.
Attempts to obtain a comment from the head teacher were unsuccessful, as she reportedly ended the call upon learning it was from a Malawi24 journalist.
Mzimba Police Station spokesperson Mariah Banda said officers have since been deployed to the school and the situation is now under control.
Meanwhile, the school recently registered a strong performance in the MSCE examinations, with the top-performing student scoring 17 points.
