At just 22 years old, Enifa Kuwani from Ntcheu District is proving that farming is not a career for the old or poor, but a powerful opportunity for the young and ambitious.
Enifa is a mixed farmer managing both crop and livestock production. On her farm, she raises goats, chickens, and doves, while also cultivating maize, sweet potatoes, and Irish potatoes. Currently, she owns two hectares of land dedicated to maize and another two acres for sweet potatoes a clear sign of her growing success.
Her journey into agriculture began seven years ago when she started raising goats and local chickens. In 2023, she expanded into maize farming after being inspired by fellow young farmer Paul Gondwe Junior.
Despite her young age, Enifa’s determination and discipline have enabled her to achieve financial independence.
“I can say farming has helped me a lot, I managed to use my own money while I was in school to buy food, clothes, and farm inputs,” she says
Her farming enterprise has also benefited her community. She employs local people temporarily, creating short-term job opportunities and empowering others through work.
However, her journey has not been without challenges. Enifa faces limited financial support, rising prices of farm inputs, and a lack of irrigation equipment that prevents her from farming throughout the year. In addition, some people underestimate her because of her youth but she remains undeterred.
“I want to expand my farm to over 40 hectares, I believe that with proper support and modern farming methods, I can achieve even more.” she declares confidently
Enifa’s message to fellow young people is both powerful and inspiring:
“Farming is not for the poor or the retired it is for everyone, especially the youth. Start small with what you have and grow step by step. Girls, don’t be afraid; you can make it too.”
Through her passion, hard work, and resilience, Enifa Kuwani is redefining what it means to be a young farmer in Malawi turning challenges into opportunities and inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.
