Northern bloc snub strengthens UTM’s Mzumara

Northern bloc snub strengthens UTM’s Mzumara- Malawi24

UTM Member of Parliament for Mzimba North, Catherine Mzumara, has criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for acting in a manner she described as “sad” and lacking inclusivity, after the party reneged on an earlier agreement with the Northern bloc.

The Northern bloc, a coalition of parties from Malawi’s northern region, had agreed to support the DPP candidate for Speaker of the House in exchange for backing from the DPP for their chosen candidate for the first deputy speaker. The bloc selected Mzumara of UTM as their nominee.

In a surprising turn, however, the DPP endorsed a different candidate for the first deputy speaker position, breaking the agreement with the Northern bloc.

Responding to the development, Mzumara said the setback has only strengthened her resolve. “No, it’s just made me stronger as a person and also as a politician,” she told reporters, emphasizing her readiness to continue the fight for equitable representation in Parliament.

Mzumara expressed disappointment at what she sees as Malawi’s failure to practice inclusivity. “It’s sad to see that Malawi preaches inclusivity. We talk about it, but we don’t act on it,” she said, stressing that her dedication to serving the country transcends party lines.

The UTM lawmaker highlighted her commitment to national development and equality. “I am a Malawian. I’m very patriotic, and I will save Malawi. I want to see a country that practices equity and ensures development is distributed across the north, center, and south. Winning or losing tomorrow, I consider myself successful for standing up for what is right,” she added.

Mzumara also reaffirmed her dedication to her constituency, citing urgent local needs such as water, sanitation, schools, and roads. “I am grateful that my people trusted me to represent them. Now, I will do my best to fulfill the promises we made,” she concluded, underlining her commitment to both national and local responsibilities.
