The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has urged all Members of Parliament, regardless of political affiliation, to support Lilongwe South Legislature Peter Dimba in tomorrow’s vote for Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila described the Speaker’s role as pivotal to Malawi’s governance and national development, saying the next occupant of the position must embody integrity, impartiality, and a commitment to unity.
Kabwila said her party had full confidence in Dimba’s leadership credentials, citing his extensive background in finance and budgeting as key assets that would help steer Parliament toward issue-based policymaking and oversight.
“Honourable Dimba is not a partisan figure,” Kabwila said. “He understands the importance of collaboration across the aisle and has demonstrated maturity, principle, and dedication to Malawi’s development.”
She emphasized that the MCP’s decision followed a rigorous internal vetting process to ensure the chosen candidate met both professional and ethical standards, adding that Dimba represented the kind of leadership that could restore public trust in Parliament.
Kabwila further announced that Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere would contest for the position of Deputy Speaker under the MCP banner, completing what she described as a “team of experience and credibility.”
She appealed to MPs from all sides, including independents, to “put the nation first” by electing leaders who would prioritize policies that improve people’s lives, particularly in areas of agriculture, education, and healthcare.
“I am confident that Parliament will make the right choice,” Kabwila said. “Malawians deserve a Speaker who will ensure the House functions effectively and delivers on its mandate to serve the people, not politics.”
