Victor Musowa, Member of Parliament for Mulanje-Bale, says he will miss the vibrant energy of his days on the opposition benches but believes it is time to embrace growth as he prepares to contest for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Reflecting on his political journey, Musowa expressed fondness for his time as a backbencher while acknowledging that leadership requires evolution.
“I’ll miss being a backbencher, but in life, you have to grow. I’m growing politically,” he said. “I’ll miss the noise and energy of that role, but I’m excited about what lies ahead.”
Ahead of tomorrow’s vote, Musowa exuded confidence, emphasizing his commitment to restoring order in the House and strengthening youth representation once elected.
“When I win tomorrow, I will bring sanity to Parliament, and my first goal is to establish a youth caucus,” he stated. “I have led youth organizations both in Malawi and internationally for several years, and now I want to champion youth empowerment in Parliament. We need a properly structured youth caucus, with a president and clear programs that enable young people to participate meaningfully.”
Musowa underscored that with 67 percent of Malawi’s population being young people, Parliament has a critical responsibility to provide them with a platform. He also commended voters for electing more young legislators this term, signaling a shift in the country’s political landscape.
“This time around, the House will be different,” he said confidently. “I will bring unity to Parliament. I’ve never been partisan, and I will ensure the House represents all Malawians.”
