Former Vice President Khumbo Kachali has pledged to support the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Parliament, signalling a spirit of cooperation aimed at accelerating development in Malawi’s Northern Region.
Kachali, who ran as a running mate for the People’s Party (PP) in the September 16 elections, made the declaration shortly after being sworn in as Member of Parliament for Mzimba South West on Monday.
He reaffirmed his commitment to work with the current administration to deliver key infrastructure and social development projects that would uplift the North.
“I thank the Almighty God for giving me this opportunity to return to this August House and to contribute once again to the development of our nation,” Kachali said. “We must work together to build this country despite the many challenges we face, and I encourage every Malawian, both within and outside the country, to play a role in national development.”
Over the next five years, Kachali outlined five key priorities he hopes to see implemented to transform the Northern Region’s economic and social landscape. These include improving road networks, establishing Mombela University, and constructing a long-promised international airport to boost connectivity and trade.
The veteran politician stressed that his legislative agenda will focus on practical, results-driven development rather than partisan politics.
“Beyond politics, our priorities as members must remain focused on tangible development, completing major road networks in the North, establishing a functioning university, and realizing the international airport project to ensure reliable transport and connectivity for our people,” he said.
Kachali also highlighted the urgency of addressing nationwide challenges such as persistent fuel shortages, foreign exchange constraints, and rising fertilizer prices, urging fellow lawmakers to collaborate in finding sustainable, long-term solutions.
