Members of Parliament under the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) caucus have chosen Peter Dimba as their preferred candidate for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.

Confirming the development to the local media, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said the party is fully rallying behind Dimba, describing him as a dependable and principled leader capable of strengthening parliamentary integrity and unity.

Reacting to his nomination, Dimba expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him by his colleagues and reaffirmed his commitment to serve with fairness and diligence.

The former Minister of lab our, further pledged to uphold the dignity of Parliament, champion the interests of Malawians, and promote the welfare of both legislators and parliamentary staff.

Writing on his Facebook page, Dimba said, “Honoured to have been elected at the MCP MPs caucus as candidate for the Speaker position in Parliament.”

Dimba’s endorsement sets the stage for a competitive Speaker’s election, with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) naming Sameer Suleman as its candidate, while People’s Development Party (PDP) leader Kondwani Nankhumwa has also entered the race.

The Speaker election is set for Wednesday, 29 October, following the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament on 27 and 28 October, with President Peter Mutharika expected to officially open Parliament on 31 October.
