Mzuzu Police have arrested four people, including three family members, in connection with the murder of Gerald Chirwa, a security guard at St John of God Hospital.
The suspects are identified as Margaret Zimba, aged 44, the deceased’s wife; Chikondi Chirwa, aged 21; Labson Chirwa, aged 18, who are the deceased’s children, and Chisomo Nkhambule, aged 27.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police, Cecilia Mfune, investigations revealed that the deceased was killed last month in Kaning’ina forest while riding his motorcycle.
Nkhambule was allegedly tasked by the family to trick Chirwa into going to the forest to collect charcoal, where he would be killed, and was promised K10 million for the deed.
Mfune stated that the deceased had a large piece of land and was known to marry multiple women, which sparked conflicts within the family. The deceased relocated to live with another wife in the Mchengautuba area of Mzuzu City before the act.
The suspects allegedly disposed of the deceased’s body and motorcycle in the forest. Mfune emphasized that the suspects have confessed to the crime and are expected to appear in court to face murder charges.
